Henningsvær grew around fishing. Spread across small islands in Lofoten, the village developed where people could work close to the sea. Its history is tied to the fishery, but its identity now also includes galleries, crafts and other small businesses. This drive follows the road away from the village and into the surrounding coastal landscape. The bridges are more than a scenic part of the drive. They connect the village islands to each other and to the mainland. Fishing established the community, while galleries and small craft businesses now add another layer to its life.
The modern village has developed around that older coastal identity, rather than replacing it. The mountains have a much longer story than the village. Glaciers carved bowl-shaped hollows into these islands, while weathering and erosion broke down the exposed rock. Across the region, steep peaks stand above a narrow coastal margin. From farther east, their outlines can merge into what is known as the Lofoten Wall.
